Hello! I live on Marco Island (near Naples, FL), retired USAF (28 years). I ride an '04 HD Deuce, lava red, Python pipes, 3" extended reach forward controls. Longest ride was '08 Ride to the Wall (Rolling Thunder) where I went with a large group from FL to DC. I came back from that trip alone via the VA Skyway and Smokey Mtn highway. A few weeks ago, several of us rode over to see the shuttle launch (300 miles each way), beautiful launch but a long ride in one day for a 15 minute show.
Anyways, I have never done Sturgis and am thinking I may just get on the bike and do it this summer. I will be in NY the last 2 weeks of July for my daughter's wedding and to spend some time with my grangkids but then I am free to roam. I may tow the bike to NY if I get my Kendon trailer back in shape and tow west as well, or I may just drive back to FL and then head west on the bike. I have a partial tear in my rotator cuff that I eventually need to have done but it has to wait until after the wedding and it could wait until after the trip--but then the rehab is long and no bike riding for 6 months or more. So, do I go this summer or wait and go next????
I'd like to go this year because I'd like to scout out Wyoming--I'm thinking of moving there next year as I am growing bored with FL. My uncertainty is at this late date would I still be able to plan a NO deadline trip to Sturgis and still be able to find a place to stay while I am there? I might even pack a tent and sleeping bag and rough it as they say and to keep down the cost. Any ideas??? Am I crazy to attempt with no real plan and go lone wolf?

Thanks for all the encouragement and info on Sturgis and WY. I started taking the trailer apart to fix up and the bike goes in for service and new tires on Tuesday so I'm planning on making the trip. If I get the trailer fixed and road ready, do they let you park your car and trailer next to your tent? (It would be nice to have the car for a back-up if really bad weather shows up. On a final note, my last 4 years was at MacDill with USCENTCOM (joint command with all service branches as well as foreign military)--and it was like one big happy family. While I still root for the Falcons, we're all brothers (and sisters) in arms. Thanks to all of you for your service whether it was for a short time or a career....GO USA! |

I am looking at 83 at Oberlin, KS. It is 634 miles to there. I have the number for small motel there. May turn north there...may continue west to 385. |

Its lots of fun, the spoke is kinda like the chip used to be, a little smaller but just as much fun, and the concerts are in the saloon area. And the pool rocks, definitely good for cooling off. Jimbo thought i would let you know they are doing road work on 83 from the kansas boarder to McCook NE maybe turn at Norton and get on 34 at Arapahoe to McCook only adds about 10 or 15 miles not sure what other work is going on 83 we usually take 26 at Ogallala up to Chadron then by Hot springs then the interstate at Rapid It takes us about seven hours to go from McCook NE to Sturgis Safe Travels |
